2016 Friends of Nursing Awards Kick-off National Nurses Week at LVHN

National Nurses Week kicked off in style at Lehigh Valley Health Network’s (LVHN’s) annual Friends of Nursing event held on Thursday (May 5) at Bethlehem’s SteelStacks.

For more than 25 years, the Friends of Nursing program has honored LVHN nursing colleagues and other health care professionals for the exceptional care they provide patients and the community. A rigorous application and interview process determines the award recipients. The program awards funding that colleagues may use for continuing education, professional development or nurse-led research that enhances patient care.

Magnet® celebration

As part of the evening’s festivities, Jan Moran and Cheryl Schmitz, representatives from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), presented Anne Panik, RN, LVHN chief nursing officer and senior vice president for patient care services, with a plaque acknowledging the fourth consecutive Magnet® designation earned by Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest, LVH–17th Street, LVH–Muhlenberg, LVHN–Tilghman, and Home Health and Hospice Services. Magnet designation is earned by fewer than 7 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. and demonstrates LVHN’s commitment to patients and families. Magnet designation also demonstrates the network is a “magnet” for the nation’s best nurses.

Fleming tribute

The program also honored the memory and Friends of Nursing legacy of Richard Fleming, who passed away in December. Fleming co-founded the Friends of Nursing program at LVHN with his late wife Peggy. He was not only a devoted sponsor of the program, he also was a witty and beloved participant in the ceremonies. This year, son Robert Fleming graciously announced award recipients’ stories, while Robert’s sister Trinka Arnold and sister-in-law Linda Fleming presented awards that are sponsored by the Fleming family.

Panik recognition

Time also was set aside to honor Panik, who will retire in June after 36 years with the network. Chief operating officer Terry Capuano, RN, shared highlights from her career, including the establishment of the Night Shift Council and LVHN’s 2013 selection for the prestigious Magnet Prize® presented by the ANCC and Cerner®.
