Gamma Knife® Icon™ Overview

Gamma Knife®, the gold standard in radiosurgery, is consistently regarded as the best noninvasive treatment for patients who have cancerous or noncancerous brain conditions. Now Gamma Knife® Icon™, the latest version of Gamma Knife, raises the bar higher. Icon is now available at LVH–Cedar Crest, the only hospital in the region to offer it.

Gamma Knife uses stereotactic radiotherapy to target tumors and other lesions of the brain. Radiation oncologist Alyson McIntosh, MD, with Allentown Radiation Oncology Associates, says what is unique about Gamma Knife Icon is how she and her colleagues can “shape” the radiation treatment. “One hundred and ninety-two tiny beams are aimed at the precise location that needs treatment. This allows us to target only the affected area while avoiding surrounding healthy tissues,” McIntosh says.

As with our previous Gamma Knife technologies, only one 15 to 60 minute treatment is needed, depending on the condition being treated. Because there is no incision, the risk for complications is low, and serious side effects are rare.

Conditions Gamma Knife can target

Gamma Knife Icon can treat many cancerous and non-cancerous conditions including:

  • Primary and metastatic brain tumors (including paraspinal)
  • Glial tumors
  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Pituitary adenomas
  • Pinealomas
  • Craniopharyngiomas
  • Meningiomas
  • Chordomas
  • Arteriovenous malformations
  • Trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux)
