VIDEO: Charting a Path to a COVID-19 Vaccine
BY ELLYN SCHINDLER
Vaccines are critical in the battle against coronavirus (COVID-19), as they are key to establishing herd immunity. Herd immunity occurs when most of a population is immune to an infectious disease. This provides indirect protection, or herd immunity, to those who are not immune to the disease.
Typically the timeline for the licensure of a vaccine in the United States is 15-20 years. Yet, given the global pandemic, more than 70 vaccine candidates for COVID-19 are being developed and tested. The hope is this timeline can be significantly shortened.
In this video produced by Pocono Television Network, Timothy Friel, MD, Chair, Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases for Lehigh Valley Health Network, shares the fundamental steps in the process for vaccine production, as well as background on COVID-19.
